Karnataka cops crack church blast case

July 15, 2000, 18:17 Hrs (IST)

Bangalore: The Corps of Detectives (CoD) probing the three blasts in churches in Karnataka on Saturday claimed that they had cracked July 8 Hubli St John Lutheran's church explosion case with the arrest of two men.

In a press statement here on Saturday, CoD director general of police V V Bhaskar said those arrested are Rishi Hirematt (30) and Syed Muniurddin Mulla (38), both residents of Hubli.

With this, the CoD has arrested three persons, including Ibrahim who was injured in a car explosion which had killed two others in the city on July 9. An hour after the car explosion, a blast had occurred in the St Paul and Peter Church in the city. Ibrahim, who is undergoing treatment at a private hospital, is in judicial custody.

Meanwhile, official sources did not rule out the hand of the Inter Services Intelligence in the blasts as Ibrahim who belongs to Deendar Chennabasaveshwara Sect had visited Pakistan twice using fake passports. Of the 12 members in the gang, two were killed in the blast and the police were on the lookout for nine others.

Three special investigating teams (SITs) have been constituted to investigate the blasts.
