Mumbai: Shiv Sena activists enforced bandhs in Pune, Thane and parts of Nasik
district on Monday in protest against the Maharashtra government's sanction to
prosecute party supremo Bal Thackeray for his alleged role in the 1992-93 Mumbai
riots.
In the metropolis, life was normal after Sunday's incidents of stone-throwing and
enforced closure of shops.
The bandh was near total in Thane district and adjoining areas and partial in Pune,
the police said.
In Thane district, shops and business establishments remained closed and vehicles
kept off the roads. There were a few incidents of stone pelting in some areas, where
state transport buses were also targeted.
In Pune, schools and colleges remained open and auto rickshaws and state transport
buses plied as usual. But shops and business establishments remained shut in Yerawada
and Tulshi Baug areas of the city. Petrol pumps were also closed in several parts of
the city.
At Vishrantwadi, nearly 30 Sena activists were rounded up for
trying to enforce bandh.
At Akurdi near Chinchwad, the police foiled an attempt by Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena
activists to burn an effigy of Deputy
Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal.
A report from Nasik said Sainiks had decided to continue their protests by organizing
rasta rokos (road blockade) and bandhs.
