11 killed as parties come to blows in WB

July 27, 2000, 12:28 Hrs (IST)

Bolpur (West Bengal): At least 11 people were killed and several injured in a series of clashes between supporters of Forward Bloc and Trinamool Congress in Sujapur village in Birbhum district on Thursday, Bolpur sub divisional officer Sushanta Ranjan Uppadhyaya said.

He said that a preliminary report said the clashes occurred after a dispute over the cutting of paddy.

Bolpur's police superintendent Sujit Kumar Sarkar, who also visited the spot, said Sujapur village had been volatile in the recent past due to frequent clashes between the rival parties supporters over the reaping of paddy.

He said both CPI (M), Forward Bloc and Trinamool Congress supporters were allegedly involved in the fighting over the share of ripened paddy.

The death toll might go up, he added. The bodies are yet to be identified.
