Trinamool memo to PM on WB violence

July 27, 2000, 18:40 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: A delegation of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) MPs led by Trinamool Congress members on Thursday called on Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and submitted a memorandum about ''the total breakdown of the law and order machinery in West Bengal''.

Minister of State for External Affairs Ajit Panja alleged that the CPI (M) had unleashed a reign of terror in Midnapore district after the victory of a Trinamool Congress candidate from Panskura Lok Sabha seat on June 5.

The defeat of the CPI (M) supported CPI candidate in Panskura has made the CPI (M) ''extremely nervous and restless'', he added. It has broken the so-called myth of invincibility of the CPI (M) in rural areas. The party, unwilling to respect the people's verdict resorted to violence in Keshpur and Pingla.

He requested the Prime Minister to send a team of NDA members of Parliament to access the ground realities in Midnapore area. He said the delegation had also asked for imposing Article 356 for the restoration of peace and law and order in the state.

The NDA delegation included Yerran Naidu (TDP), Mohan Rawale (SS), Ragunath Jha (JD-U), Vaiko (MDMK) and Kirit Somaya (BJP).
