Jyoti Basu shifted to AIIMS
P. Jayaram
July 28,2000 14:05 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister and Marxist icon Jyoti Basu was shifted to Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where a team of cardiologists were attending on him. Basu was earlier admitted to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on Friday after he complained of uneasiness during a party meeting.

Sources in the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) said Basu, 87, India's longest serving chief minister, complained of uneasiness while a meeting of the party's policy-making central committee was under way.

"He was taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and his condition is all right," a party official said. Speaking to indiainfo.com, party leader Somnath Chatterjee clarified that it was not a case of mild heart attack, but just uneasiness. He added that Basu will be under observation for a couple of days. Basu, who has been chief minister of West Bengal for 22 years, has announced his intention to retire from public life at the end of this year.
