Ahmedabad: An undergraduate student who wrote a letter to Gujarat University
pretending to be an aide to President K.R. Narayanan has been arrested.
Kamlesh Mahavar made a mistake - he mailed the letter not from New Delhi but
Navsari, a south Gujarat district.
Officials said Mahavar, a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) student at Borsad in Anand
district of central Gujarat, wanted to shift to a college in Ahmedabad but
university rules blocked his way.
He then created a letterhead of the President's Secretariat, New Delhi.
Impersonating a secretary to the president he wrote a letter to the convener of the
B.Ed. admission cell saying Mahavar was his relative and he would deem it a favor if
the student was transferred to a college in Ahmedabad.
To strengthen Mahavar's case the "secretary" also gave some reasons: that his
(Mahavar's) father was ill in Ahmedabad and if he were not transferred it would be
difficult for him to pursue his studies.
But the stamp of the Navsari district post office on the mail aroused the suspicions
of the university officials.
Harshad Patel, a lecturer in a B.Ed college in Ahmedabad who is also associated with
the admission cell, told IANS the suspicion increased as the letter requested that
all future correspondence be done with Mahavar and that no communication be sent to
the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The admission cell, after investigations, sent a letter to Mahavar saying he would
be transferred but he would have to appear before it. It must have been a happy
Mahavar that appeared before the cell, only to be arrested. The imposter is now
awaiting disciplinary action.
