No change of stance in J&K yet, says Army

July 28, 2000, 21:30 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Army Headquarters on Friday said there was no change in the military stance against the proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir following the ceasefire announced by the Hizbul Mujahideen.

Reacting to the statement made by Chief of Staff 15 Corps, Maj Gen Basant Singh, in Srinagar that troops had suspended all offensive operations against militants, Army Headquarters said a decision was yet to be taken by the government on the ceasefire offer.

The ceasefire offer was being considered by the government and until a decision was taken, the army's military position in the valley and elsewhere in the state would remain the same.

Gen Singh was reported to have said instructions were issued to all field commanders to stop offensive operations against militants across the valley and the army would only retaliate if attacked.
