Dengue fever kills 2 more in Dhaka

Dhaka: Spread of dengue continued in Dhaka with two more deaths reported in the capital city while 77 more people were admitted to various hospitals and clinics in the past few days.

Two unidentified persons died on Thursday raising the dengue toll to 112, doctors said. However, the health department claimed only 35 people had died of the disease and 1,844 people were affected.

The health department has advised hospitals and clinics outside Dhaka to send their patients to the capital for proper treatment.

Meanwhile, Dhaka residents expressed dissatisfaction over the city corporation's campaign in containing the spread of the disease. They alleged that the civic agency's drive to kill mosquitoes did not reach several areas of the city. Dengue is caused by the aedes aegypti mosquito.

Residents also alleged that the corporation was spraying insecticides in the name of destroying mosquitoes. The corporation had earlier announced a weeklong intensive program to kill mosquitoes in a bid to arrest the spread of dengue.

Meanwhile, voluntary organizations, intellectuals, film and television stars and singers have launched a joint campaign to destroy the killer mosquitoes. They have been going around the city clearing bushes and cleaning up water bodies.
