Spanish tourists’ killers still at large

Aug 27, 2000 21:20 Hrs (IST)

Shimla: Police have sounded an alert in India's northern state of Himachal Pradesh to arrest the killers of Spanish tourist Maria Angeles Gironeus (35) and her 15-year- old son Cristobel who were killed on Friday night in their trekking camp in Kullu district.

Police said a massive manhunt had been launched to arrest the culprits and 'nakas' set up at exit points to prevent their escape. A police party, headed by the additional superintendent of police, has already left for the site - on a trekking route- to bring the bodies to Kullu.

A British national Martin Young who was injured in the attack was brought to the zonal hospital at Kullu early Sunday morning and is said to be out of danger.

Martin, who is working as a civil engineer in New Delhi, sustained blunt weapon injury on his head. District Police Chief Anurang Garg said a doctor from New Delhi had arrived at Kullu to assess martin's condition and to decide whether he has to be shifted to New Delhi.

The sources said the culprits had attacked the trekker's tent with canes and later threw the three into a 40-foot deep gorge at around 2200 hours IST.

The injured Martin, however, managed to reach the hilltop in the wee hours and informed a porter, he in turn, informed an official of the National Hydro Power Corporation who conveyed the message to the Kullu police.
