Aug 27, 2000 22:55 Hrs (IST)

Barrackpore (West Bengal): The arrested Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) suspect and Hizbul Muzaheedin activist Jahid Ahmed has been remanded to police custody for 12 days by a Sub-Divisional Judicial Court Sunday.

A case was registered against Jahid for waging war against the country.

He was taken into the custody by the border security force (BSF) on August 24 from Ghojadanga on the Indo-Bangladesh International border near Basirhat in North 24 Parganas and admitted to Basirhat Sub-Divisional Hospital on August 25 for cardiac problems.

The Sub-Divisional Hospital had referred him to SSKM hospital in Calcutta Saturday night.

However, unconfirmed reports said the accused was beaten up during interrogation.

The 40-year old Kashmiri militant was produced at the Sunday court Sunday morning after he was taken back to the police custody from the SSKM Hospital Sunday, police sources said.
