Vajpayee unlikely to meet Musharraf in US

Aug. 27, 2000 9:00 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee is not likely to meet Pakistani military ruler Gen. Pervez Musharraf in New York during their stay there for the UN Millennium Summit commencing Sept. six.

"No meeting is planned," India's ambassador to the US Naresh Chandra told Star News when asked whether a meeting between Vajpayee and Musharraf was on the cards.

Stating that this had been "over-blown" by the media, he said, "there is no prospect of such a meeting."

The U S and other key countries have been urging both India and Pakistan to resume their dialogue, stalled since the Pakistani intrusion in Kargil last year, and take steps to reduce tension in the region.

India has maintained that as initiators of the dialogue, it was not against holding talks with Pakistan but it has insisted that Islamabad must stop sponsoring terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of the country and cease hostile propaganda against India to help create a conducive atmosphere for having a meaningful dialogue.
