Incessant rains worsens Assam flood situation
Tuesday, July 2 2002 19:15 Hrs (IST)

Tezpur (Assam): The flood situation in central Assam's Sonitpur district on July 1 turned grave following incessant rain in the Northern districts and the foothills of Arunachal Pradesh.

The Brahmaputra and its tributaries including Jiabhoroli were rising alarmingly and inundated vast areas of the district, official sources said.

The National Highway number-52 between Mangaldoi in Darrang district and Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district was flooded by rainwater and road communication disrupted since July 1 night in several places.

A large number of heavy vehicles remained stranded in Rowta.
