'Indian Army capable of giving a befitting reply'
Friday, July 5 2002 13:03 Hrs (IST)

Gurez (Kashmir): Indian Army is ready and capable of giving a befitting reply to any aggression from the enemy across the line of control (LoC), a senior Army official said.

Commander of police brigade posted at Gurez sector brigadier Gurmeet Kanwal said that the jawans and officers were raring to cross the LoC "given half a chance" and "we will prove that we are second to none", Brig Kanwal told a group of visiting media men on July 4.

Asked about the comparisons made by various agencies between the Armies of India and Pakistan, the brigadier claimed, "I have worked with Pakistani Army personnel in the mission in Namibia and they are not a patch to the Indian Army."

"Their jawans are very good. As good as ours but I do not think I can say the same about their officers. We have one of the best Armies, well trained, well equipped and disciplined," he said.

On the prevailing situation in Gurez sector under his command, Brig Kanwal said, "Pakistani troops have been shelling villages almost daily for over a month now. Between 30-40 shells land on this side everyday."

"The targets are mostly civilians. Houses have collapsed and there have been some casualties including the death of an 11-year-old girl 0who died in Pakistani shelling," he added.
