Srinagar: Militants on July 5 attacked a state politician, killing his close associate and injuring him and a civilian.

Two pistol-borne militants inside his office in Zaindar Mohalla fired upon Ghulam Nabi Dar, chairman of Awami Mahaz, police said.

They said general secretary of the party, Anwar Hussain Banka died on the spot, while Dar and a civilian were injured.

At the time of the incident, Dar was reportedly holding a meeting of his party workers.

The injured were admitted to SMHS hospital, where their condition was stated to be serious.

No militant outfit has owned responsibility for the attack.

Police and border security forces (BSF) immediately reached the scene and cordoned of the area to nab the militants responsible for the incident.

A pistol magazine and some empty cartridges were recovered from the spot.

Dar, who was running a medical shop in Kulgam area of Anantnag before joining politics, had unsuccessfully contested 1996 Assembly elections from Kulgam on Panthers Party ticket.

He left the party recently to float his own group "Awami Mahaz", which has pro-India leanings.
