Major Bihar rivers in spate, situation worsens
Friday, July 5 2002 18:15 Hrs (IST)

Patna: The flood situation in Bihar on July 5 aggravated with major rivers like Punpun, Bagmati, Kosi and Gandak in spate following incessant rains in their catchment areas in the past 48 hours in North Bihar.

According to a Central Water Commission report, the turbulent Punpun and Bagmati rivers were flowing 35 cm and 22 cm above red mark at Sripalpur and Benibad, respectively.

Gandak, Kamala Balan and Kosi were also showing a rising trend, the report said.

The state's relief and rehabilitation department sources said that nearly one lakh people in 200 villages, spread over five districts of Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga and Madhubani, were affected by the floods.

Meanwhile, rail traffic was disrupted since July 4 night on Kiul-Gaya section of the Eastern Railway as swirling waters of the Ganga and Kiul rivers submerged the tracks between Sheikhpura and Sirari stations.
