Srinagar: Ruling out the possibility of participating in the coming elections to the
Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) on July 7 said the polls will not
solve the Kashmir issue.
"Although the organisation believes in democracy but to form a government through
elections cannot resolve the Kashmir dispute," JeI said in a statement after a
meeting of its advisory committee and district leaders.
Jamaat, which is a constituent of Hurriyat Conference, said, "We will follow in
letter and spirit the programme being chalked out by the Hurriyat Conference
regarding the Assembly elections."
It said Kashmir has become a root cause of tension between India and Pakistan and
the Valley has become a nuclear flashpoint in South Asia.
"It is high time for the international community, particularly United States, to
intervene and pressurise both India and Pakistan to resolve the vexed problem
(Kashmir)," the statement said.
Poverty on both sides has increased manifold due to the increase in Defence budget
and it is draining the economy, it said, adding it can be resolved if solved
according to the wishes and aspirations of the people.
It said the United Nations Resolution should be implemented and tripartite talks
between the leadership of India, Pakistan and Kashmir should be held to resolve the
issue.
