Madurai: Six Sri Lankan Tamils, who were allegedly dumped by the Sri Lankan Navy at
Irandamthittai off Dhanushkodi coast, were rescued by Indian Coast Guard and brought
to the Mandapam coast, officials said.
The officials said the refugees spent the whole night shivering due to adverse
weather conditions and were brought to the shore on July 10.
The Mandapam refugee camp officials said that the refugees belonged to
Kankesanthurai in Jaffna.
Meanwhile, an office bearer of the fishermen's association alleged that the Sri
Lankan naval men were intruding into the Indian territory frequently. The Central
Intelligence officials also shared the view.
The officials felt that security in the palk straits should be further tightened as
the Presidential nominee A P J Abdul Kalam was likely to visit Madurai frequently
and the Chief Minister's proposed visit Ramanathapuram district shortly.
The intelligence officials stressed the need for close monitoring of the refugees
activities in the refugees camp in the wake of the arrest of the Marumalarchi
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) functionaries.
