Washington: The US Senate intelligence Committee probing the Sept 11 terrorist
attacks have found no single intelligence information that could have prevented the
strike and have, instead decided to focus on systematic problems and improvements
rather than assigning blame.
"As far as I know, there is no smoking gun," Democratic Senator Evan Bayh, a member
of the Senate Select Committee on intelligence was quoted by an American daily as
saying.
With no evidence pointing to a single intelligence breakdown, the panel has turned
to the task of identifying and fixing more systemic weaknesses within the country's
$ 30 billion intelligence system, the panel said.
"We've spent the first couple of weeks on where we've been," Bayh said, adding, "No
we need to pivot and focus on where we need to go. I hope we're in the process of
shifting from a place where people were looking to assign blame and instead focusing
on systematic problems and improvisations received."
"One still expects to find a lot of pieces of information that, had they been
correlated, analysed and disseminated, you could have a different outcome," said
Senator Richard C Shelby the ranking Republican on the Senate Panel who has been a
fierce critic of CIA Director George J Tenet, told 'The Washington Post'.
