Gandhinagar: Super cop K P S Gill would have to stay put in Gujarat as security
advisor to Chief Minister until the Assembly elections, whenever they are held
within the next seven months.
With the 'rath yatra' passing off smoothly on July 12, especially in Ahmedabad and
other parts of violence-hit Gujarat, which was slowly coming to terms with peace and
normalcy, Gill along with many other officials heaved a sigh of relief, sources
close to Gill said on July 13.
Gill had on July 12 reportedly said that with smooth passage of 'rath yatra' in
Gujarat, he believed that the work he was assigned for and deputed to the state was
over.
The former director general of Punjab police was sent to Gujarat as the security
advisor to Chief Minister when the state was in the midst of mindless orgy of
violence in the aftermath of Godhra train carnage on February 27.
Immediately after his arrival in Gandhinagar, a semblance of Law and order was
restored in the state, and even against opposition, Gill advocated taking out of
the 'rath yatra' to test efficacy and efficiency of law enforcement agencies, which
have come out trumps with smooth passage of the annual festival.
The foiling of a conspiracy to cause bloodshed in Ahmedabad with arrest of 24
persons and seizure of a huge cache of arms and ammunition from them was another
feather in the cap of law-enforcing agencies.
