Islamabad: President Pervez Musharraf has insisted the proposed Constitutional
amendments are prompted by a desire to see Democracy take root in Pakistan as he
began consultations to elicit public opinion on the controversial issue.
"The President has reiterated that the Constitutional amendment process will be
guided by the desire to reintroduce Democracy on a sustainable basis," state-run
Radio Pakistan reported on July 13.
The President on July 13 started consultations with people of different walks of
life, including newspapers editors and columnists, politicians, lawyers and women.
"Pervez Musharraf assured the media representatives that the amendments will be
finalised and decided only after the government has heard views and opinions of all
sections of the society," the radio said.
The amendments have been roundly condemned by Opposition parties, particularly the
16-party grouping Alliance for Restoration of Democracy, as an attempt by Musharraf
to retain unquestionable powers.
The radio added that Musharraf has assured that whatever decision is taken will be
in the light of the discussions.
Following the meeting, the media representatives said that the President detailed
the role of the National Security Council and powers of the President and the Prime
Minister under the proposed amendments.
They also backed the amendments relating to strengthening the Parliamentary system
and those aimed at checking frequent dismissal of assemblies and misuse of power.
