New Delhi: Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani on July 13 indicated the possibility of
the Vice Presidential candidate being from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and said
National Democratic Alliance (NDA) convenor George Fernandes was holding talks with
coalition partners on the matter.
"When we announced the name of the Presidential nominee, a leader who does not
belong to BJP said the candidate should have been from the BJP. But our nominee (A P
J Abdul Kalam) was not," he told Doordarshan in an interview.
He said it was now for Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to take a decision on the
Vice Presidential candidate, which many of the coalition partners feel should be
from BJP.
"The Prime Minister has given the responsibility of speaking to NDA partners in this
regard to George Fernandes," he said, adding the process was on.
