Advani, Farooq face crowd anger at massacre site
Sunday, July 14 2002 20:49 Hrs (IST)

Demonstrators burning an effigy of Musharraf in wake of massacre in J&K Jammu: Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah on July 14 got a hostile reception when they visited Qasimnagar, the scene of the massacre of 27 people on July 13 by militants, with slum-dwellers shouting slogans against them.

As Advani and Abdullah, on their arrival at the site, were being briefed by general officer commanding (GOC) Maj Gen Pandey and other state officers, the slum-dwellers, angry with the role of the state government, shouted at Advani asking him talk to the people instead of taking an official brief.

The residents asked Advani and Abdullah to come out of the shop, where the briefing for them was on amidst slogan-shouting, and talk to the families of the victims.

"Bahar aao Advani, Farooq ka saath chor do...Farooq ko bhi bahar lao (Come out Advani, give up Farooq's company and bring out Farooq too)," they cried out.

"Farooq in sabhi ke liye jimmedar hai...27 lashe jalai hain humne ...bahar aa ke humse baat karo (Farooq is responsible for all this. We have burnt 27 bodies. Come out and talk to us)," the anger in the residents burst out.

"(Article) 370 ka kya kiya," continued the shouting.

Meanwhile, Advani said India has succeeded in bringing international pressure to bear on Pakistan for sponsoring terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

In his brief address to a gathering at Qasimnagar, Advani, without naming Pakistan, said, "We had been trying for the past four years to bring international pressure on the country sponsoring terrorism here."

"After three years of the government's continuous efforts, we have been successful on this front," the Deputy Prime Minister said.

Regarding the massacre, he sought to pacify the irate residents of Qasimnagar saying "it is a matter not only concerning you people but the entire country".

"These situations have come before us and it is a matter for the country to decide," he said.
