Alexander files RS nomination as independent
Monday, July 15 2002 13:53 Hrs (IST)

Mumbai: Former Maharashtra Governor P C Alexander on July 15 filed his nomination papers for Rajya Sabha elections as an independent candidate.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar had declared his party's support to Alexander.

Alexander was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal and NCP state chief Babanrao Pachpute at the time of filing nominations.

July 15 is the last day for filing nominations for the July 25 Rajya Sabha poll. The seat fell vacant due to death of NCP member Mukesh Patel.

Alexander resigned on July 8 as Governor of Maharashtra, eight months ahead of expiry of his term.
