Presidential poll: CPM MP misses chance to cast vote
Monday, July 15 2002 15:22 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: A last minute change of mind on the venue of voting robbed a West Bengal Member of Parliament (MP) of his chance to vote in the Presidential poll on July 15.

Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) MP Laxman Chandra Seth could not cast his ballot in Parliament House, as his name did not figure in the electoral list.

Seth had earlier sought permission to exercise his franchise from Kolkata, which was granted to him, but decided at the last minute to vote in Delhi since Parliament was in session.

But to his dismay, the Lok Sabha member found his name missing from the electoral list.

Rajya Sabha secretary general R C Tripathi, who is also the Returning Officer, later said since the member had opted for a particular venue, his ballot paper had been sent there and he could vote only there.

Voting was held in Parliament House and State Assemblies, as the electoral college comprises MPs and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) across the country.
