BJP joins NDA allies' demand to amend POTA
Monday, July 15 2002 20:07 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: With its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners favouring amendments to Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) to provide for further safeguards in the wake of arrest of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) MP Vaiko, BJP on July 15 said that it was also in favour of its amendment.

"Some NDA allies did express apprehension when POTO was being taken up and therefore when NDA felt the need to amend POTA, it should be done so," party spokesperson V K Malhotra told reporters.

He said some precautions were taken when enacting the Law but "we have to look into the matter whether somebody goes to court. At the moment we would wait for what the court decides in the case against Vaiko. But, the misuse of POTA has to be stopped. Anyway let us wait for the court to decide".

However, he said anyone supporting a terrorist organisation with moral or financial assistance should be arrested under POTA.
