‘Govt concerned over Sino-Pak defence ties’
Thursday, July 18 2002 22:27 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Government is concerned about certain aspects of China-Pakistan relationship, which "adversely affect our security", Minister of State for External Affairs Digvijay Singh informed the Rajya Sabha on July 18.

This includes Sino-Pak Defence co-operation, including in nuclear weapons and missile development programme, Singh said in a written reply.

"We have made known our concerns to the Chinese side," he said.

The minister said the government is committed to development of friendly and good neighbourly relations with China on the basis of principles of Panchsheel, mutual sensitivity to each others concerns and equity.

He said this was underscored during the visit of Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji to India in January 2002, the visit of External Affairs Minister to China in March-April 2002year and during the meeting of the Prime Minister and Chinese President Jiang Zemin last month.

The minister said after the Kaluchak massacre in Jammu and Kashmir, the Chinese Foreign Office spokesman stated, "the position of the Chinese government is very clear. We wish to express our strong condemnation and our sympathies to the families of the injured people".
