Srinagar: Army troops shot dead five Pak-trained militants foiling an infiltration bid by them in Nowgam sector in Kupwara district near the line of control (LoC) in the wee hours of July 19, Defence sources said.

The troops challenged the militants who were trying to sneak into the Valley late July 18 night and asked them to surrender. However, the ultras opened fire and in the ensuing encounter that lasted several hours, five militants were killed, they said.

The sources said it was not immediately known whether any militant escaped at the time of the encounter.

A massive search operation was continuing in the area, they added.
