7 PWG members surrender after encounter in Jharkhand

Daltonganj: Seven members of the banned Peoples' War Group (PWG) including its self- styled 'group commander' surrendered with their firearms and cash after an encounter with the police at Murusumi village in Jharkhand's Palamu district on July 19, top police official said.

Acting on a tip off, the district police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans raided the village during the wee hours in which the ultras resorted to heavy firing, superintendent Anil Palta said.

The police returned the fire and the encounter lasted for over three hours during which over 500 rounds were fired from both sides, he said.

Seven ultras laid down their arms after the encounter, the SP said adding the arms included 10 rifles and guns, 250 cartridges, four revolvers, landmines and detonators, naxal literature, cameras, calculators and cash over Rs 9,000, he said.

A case has been registered against them under Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA), he added.
