Chennai: Two senior leaders of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) on July
21 dismissed as "baseless" reports that the party was planning to move the Supreme
Court for securing the release of its chief Vaiko, arrested under Prevention of
Terrorism Act (POTA), and said it would wait for the chargesheet in the case before
deciding next course of action.
Union Minister of State for Finance and MDMK deputy general secretary Gingee N
Ramachandran said on July 21 night that the party would wait for the chargesheet to
be filed in a Special Court against Vaiko, arrested for making alleged pro-
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) speech recently.
Union Non-Conventional Energy Sources Minister and party treasurer M Kannappan said
at Coimbatore, "There is no proposal to file any petition either in the Supreme
Court or High Court challenging Vaiko's arrest and (he is) not even filing a bail
petition."
Ramachandran said he and Kannappan had consultations with former Law Minister and
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley at New Delhi on Vaiko's arrest and
the discussions were conveyed to Vaiko by them when they met him at Vellore prison
on July 19.
"Only an FIR has been filed now. Only when the chargesheet is filed in a Special
Court, MDMK headquarters will decide about the next course of action," he
said.
The party's senior leaders would meet in Chennai on July 27 to discuss about the
latest political situation in the state, he said.
