Jammu: The month-long Amarnath yatra, stopped for a day due to inclement weather,
resumed on July 23 with 6,221 pilgrims proceeding to the cave shrine from here,
official sources said.
The fourth batch comprising 4,974 men, 812 women, 62 children and 383 'sadhus' left
in 454 vehicles from M A M Stadium, the base camp of the 'yatris'.
The decision to resume the 'yatra' was taken following reports that the road
condition was reasonably good between Jammu and Kashmir valley despite sporadic
rains, the sources said.
The road blockade near Ramban, 155 kms from here due to landslides, was also removed
on the night of July 22, they added.
Another reason to allow the 'yatra' to proceed from here was to reduce the number of
stranded pilgrims who had swelled to 15,000 on the evening of July 22.
The batch of July 23, included registered pilgrims of July 22, they said, adding
that on average a maximum of 3,500 pilgrims are allowed to proceed on daily basis.
Meanwhile, officials were trying to accommodate the stranded pilgrims in different
government schools.
