London: A London-based non-resident Indian (NRI) and chairman of Britain's
Commission for Racial Equality, and his wife has been charged of a public order
offence following an incident outside Lord's cricket ground after India defeated
England in the NatWest cricket final two weeks ago.
51-year old Gurbux Singh was charged at Marylebone police station in Central London
for allegedly threatening a police officer following a brawl after "accidently
stumbling" onto him.
His wife, Siobhan, who was arrested for obstructing, received a formal caution, but
was not charged.
The couple were arrested following the incident on July 13 and their bail hearing
was held at Marylebone police station in London on July 25.
"The officers spoke to the 51-year old man, but, despite efforts by officers and
those with the man to persuade him to calm himself, he behaved in a disorderly
manner to those around him and to the officer," Scotland Yard sources
said.
Singh was arrested under the Public Order Act and face a maximum sentence of six
months in jail if convicted.
"At the end of the match there was an incident that led to my wife and I being
detained by the police. I'm awaiting confirmation from the police if the matter is
to be pursued and therefore cannot make any further comment." Singh said in a
statement after his arrest.
