Chennai: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) on July 27 firmly ruled out
moving the courts for securing the release of its chief and Prevention of Terrorism
Act (POTA) detenue Vaiko.
MDMK treasurer and Union Non-conventional Energy Sources Minister M Kannappan told
reporters after a meeting of the party's district secretaries that party had no
plans to move bail or to challenge his arrest at present.
Party would seek legal remedies only after the police filed a chargesheet against
Vaiko, who was arrested for allegedly making a speech at a public meeting at
Tirumangalam in June in support of the banned Liberation of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), he
said.
Kannappan said his party never supported LTTE's activities in India, but was only
extending "moral support to it in its fight against the Sri Lankan government for
the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils".
He said Vaiko had told him that he was not willing to come out on bail.
He said MDMK was confident of proving the innocence of its leader in the court, when
the case came up for hearing.
He said the party would organise series of agitation programmes protesting against
the "misuse" of POTA for arresting Vaiko.
He charged the Tamil Nadu government with not concentrating on drought relief works
but was paying attention only to arrest the political rivals under POTA. While
other state governments had sought more funds from the Centre, Tamil Nadu had asked
for only Rs 57 crore, though several districts were reeling under a severe water
shortage.
