New Delhi: India on July 27 night firmly conveyed to US Secretary of State Colin
Powell that Islamabad has to do "more" to lower tensions by ending cross-border
terrorism even as he asserted that ''friendly countries'' must keep their pledges.
During talks with External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha, Powell emphasised that
ensuing elections in Jammu and Kashmir must be without interruption or terrorists'
violence.
Powell, who leaves for Pakistan on July 28 after talks with Prime Minister Atal
Behari Vajpayee and Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, clearly recognised the need
for Pakistan to deliver on its promises to permanently end infiltration in Jammu and
Kashmir, an External Affairs Ministry spokesperson said.
Asserting that Pakistan was violating UN Security Council Resolution 1373
passed after the September 11 attacks on the US to combat terrorism, the MEA
spokesperson said, "Pakistan has to do more if tensions are to reduce and
the possibility of dialogue is to be realised."
In a clear message to Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, Powell stressed
during the parleys that, "The US is used to their friends keeping their
pledges".
