Hyderabad: Condoling the sudden demise of Vice-President Krishan Kant, Andhra
Pradesh Cabinet on July 27decided to erect his statue at a city park and name it
after him.
As the news of Kant's demise came in the midst of the Assembly session, the state
Cabinet held an emergency meeting to place on record its deep grief over the death
of Kant, who had served as the state Governor from 1990 to 1997.
The Cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, decided to
declare a three-day mourning in the state.
Shortly later, Naidu moved a condolence motion in the Assembly and members paid rich
tributes to Kant, recalling his services to the nation right from the days of
freedom struggle.
Naidu, who had played a key role in Kant's elevation to Vice-President's post,
recalled his association with the departed leader and said his untimely demise was a
great loss to the nation.
“I had met him in Delhi two days back during the swearing-in ceremony of Abdul
Kalam. It has turned out to be my last meeting with him,” the Chief Minister said in
an emotion-choked voice.
The members observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed
leader.
Shortly later, the House was adjourned sine die after the 11-day monsoon session.
