Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TC) on August 4 warned that West Bengal government
would be responsible for any untoward incident during its 24-hour, state-wide bandh
on August 5, but ruling Left Front major Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)
dismissed the possibility of a confrontation with TC in foiling the bandh.
''All steps will be taken to keep the bandh peaceful. But, if any untoward incident
takes place, the government will be responsible,'' TC chief Mamta Banerjee told
reporters.
She said that the bandh, called against the move to bifurcate the Eastern Railway,
was also in protest against the Centre's step-motherly attitude towards West Bengal
and the state government's indifference to the problem.
Banerjee said that her party men would not attempt to disrupt any programme of the
CPI-M scheduled to commemorate the birth anniversary on August 5 of Muzaffar Ahmed,
founder of the Communist Party.
While criticising the bandh as being against the interest of the state and aimed at
Banerjee's political rehabilitation, CPI-M state secretary Anil Biswas, however,
said that his party would not go into any confrontation with the TC in foiling the
bandh.
Stating that the people of the state would reject the bandh, Biswas called upon them
to maintain normalcy and join work without fear.
