Vajpayee calls for greater party-govt co-ordination
Sunday, August 4 2002 19:42 Hrs (IST)

Indian Prime Minister A B Vajpayee New Delhi: A day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) adopted a Delhi pledge to rectify its weaknesses, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee emphasised on greater co- ordination between the party and the government even as the party asked its ministers to respond immediately to public grievances.

Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani would be holding meetings with BJP members of Parliament (MPs) area-wise for four days beginning on August 5 as part of the interaction exercise. Party general secretaries would also be present at the meeting.

According to party sources, earlier the Prime Minister used to hold such meetings.

At a luncheon meeting with the BJP office-bearers, Vajpayee said the government has done good work and it was the party's responsibility to take the message to the grass-root level, party president Venkaiah Naidu told reporters.

Vajpayee asked the party to ensure that the benefits of development reached the common people and there was greater interaction between the party and the government, Naidu said.

The meeting was part of the ongoing exercise to galvanise the party ahead of the crucial Assembly elections in 10 states including Gujarat.

Later, the party leaders at a meeting with the BJP ministers in the Union Cabinet asked them to "immediately and appropriately respond to representations made by the public and party workers".
