Tehelka accuses CBI of harassment, agency says no
Monday, August 5 2002 15:41 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Charging the government with resorting to "pressure tactics and harassment", tehelka.com investigation editor Anirudh Bahal on August 5 said Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials were visiting his office without any notice and demanding to talk to employees of the news portal even as CBI asserted that the official went to portal's office after fixing a prior appointment.

"DSP N S Kharayat, who is investigation officer in the official's secrets act (OSA) case involving a story done by the portal on funding of militants in North-East, visited our office and demanded that he wanted to speak to our employees," he said.

Bahal said the official was also not carrying any notice regarding the same.

However, CBI spokesman said Kharayat had gone to the portal's office to examine one of their employees' only after fixing an appointment on August 3 last.

"But the moment Bahal saw him, he broke into abusive language and assaulted Kharayat which he is going to report to his seniors," the spokesman said.

The OSA case came about after the portal put details of a secret and confidential meeting among the top government officials on its Website as part of the funding story.

The government has already suspended two Home Ministry officials regarding alleged leakage of the secret documents of the meeting.
