Johannesburg: India is rallying the support of several countries for the
ratification of the contentious Kyoto Protocol during the Conference of Parties to
the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to be held in New Delhi
between October 25 and November 1.
"The developed countries will have to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by certain
agreed proportions. We, therefore, want the Kyoto Protocol to be ratified and
implemented as quickly as possible," Minister for Environment and Forest T R Baalu
said.
"I want to ensure that there is a proper declaration about the 1994 Kyoto Protocol
during the New Delhi conference," Baalu, who is leading the Indian delegation to the
World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) said, adding he had already spoken to
several countries in this regard.
The Kyoto Protocol entails certain commitments on the part of developed countries to
reduce the emission of greenhouse gases that results in climate change.
