Jana disputes Sonia claim on electoral Ordinance
Saturday, August 31 2002 15:53 Hrs (IST)

Bangalore: Union Minister for Law and Justice, K Jana Krishnamurthi on August 31 disputed Congress president Sonia Gandhi's categorical statement that the country's main Opposition party did not support the Representation of the People (Amendment) Ordinance, asserting that there was consensus by political parties on the issue.

Krishnamurthi told reporters that its draft had been circulated among all MPs, adding, the government had also convened a meeting of all political parties where there was consensus on the matter, including the Congress.

"Had Parliament not adjourned, this would have been a Law by this time. The government was forced to come out with this Ordinance," he said.

Gandhi had earlier this week came out in open opposition against the Ordinance on the premise that it bypassed the will of the people and defied the basic tenets of transparency and accountability in politics.
