Kashmiri pandits meet Sonia over JK re-organisation
Saturday, August 31 2002 15:50 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: A delegation of a frontline organisation of Kashmiri pandits on August 31 met Congress President Sonia Gandhi and pressed the need for a geo-political re- organisation of Jammu and Kashmir even as it claimed the coming Assembly polls in the state would be an "exercise in futility" for the displaced community.

The seven-member delegation of Panun Kashmir (PK), led by its convenor Agnishekhar, stressed the need for "political space" and "proper dispensation of political rights" of the community before participation in the polls could be "even thought of", PK president Moti Kaul said after the 20-minute meeting with Gandhi.

"We explained the futility of ongoing Assembly elections in the state vis-a-vis Kashmiri pandits," Kaul said adding PK's argument was based on, "The facts that the genocide and exodus of the community has not been addressed and that we are seen as a commodity to be traded only at the time of polls."

Stating that "all methods to address the problem over the last 13 years have proved futile", the delegation maintained that geo-political reorganisation of the state was the "only lasting solution that will be beneficial for all sections".
