Chennai: Union Minister of State for Home C Vidya Sagar Rao on August 31 said there
was no plan with the Central government to amend Prevention of Terrorism Act and
such a Law was necessary to deal with matters concerning terrorism.
He made these remarks at the Chennai airport when reporters asked him whether the
government was planning to amend POTA, as there were complaints from various
political parties that its provisions were being misused.
Rao, who is in the city to participate in a private function, said the Union
government was ready to send central forces to nab forest brigand Veerappan, if the
states concerned made such a request.
"We are closely watching the developments," he said.
Maintenance of law and order was a state subject.
Whatever intelligence information was received by the central intelligence agencies,
they were often shared with the state governments concerned.
The Centre was giving any needed advice to the state governments concerned with
nabbing Veerappan, the minister said.
