Chennai: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on September 4 said that the Dravida
Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a major constituent of the National Democratic Alliance
(NDA), should come out with a 'clear cut' stand on its relationship with the party
in Tamil Nadu.
Union Minister of State for Shipping and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader S
Thirunavukarasar told reporters that while DMK was part of NDA government at the
Centre with three ministers, the party was not in alliance with BJP in Tamil Nadu.
"I hope and wish that DMK will continue in the NDA for the next Lok Sabha polls and
in the state," he said.
DMK had snapped ties with the Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP, alleging that the state
leadership was "communal", but decided to continue its alliance with NDA at the
Centre.
He said that the BJP had no relationship with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra
Kazhagam (AIADMK), but at the government level, the Centre and the government
had "cordial relationship".
He welcomed the stand of AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa that only a natural born Indian
should become the Prime Minister of the country. BJP had been airing this view and
with Jayalalithaa, endorsing the BJP stand, a national debate had started on the
subject, he said.
He criticised the Congress for burning the effigies of Jayalalithaa and described
such incidents as "undignified".
