Tripura CM alleges ex-insurgent aiding ultras in state
Wednesday, September 4 2002 14:20 Hrs (IST)

Agartala: Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has alleged that former insurgent leader and president of Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) Bijoy Kumar Hrankhawl was extending support to insurgent outfits of the state.

Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) was aiding the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), Sarkar said in his written reply in Tripura assembly on September 3 and alleged Hrankhawl was supporting these two banned outfits.

"It is evident from the speech of Hrankhawl in Geneva that he has been supporting the seditious and separatist armed activities of NLFT and ATTF," the Chief Minister said while replying to a reference notice brought by ruling Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPM) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Amitava Datta.

Though Hrankhawl had promised to shun the path of violence and came over ground by laying down arms, it was unfortunate that he was still supporting the ISI-aided activities of ATTF and NLFT, Sarkar rued.

The Chief Minister had to table his written reply as he could not raise his voice amidst bedlam created by the MLAs of INPT and a section of Congress as he began his address.

The INPT chief, who is also an MLA, delivered his speech in the meeting of the UN Working Group of Indigenous People in Geneva held between July 22 to 26.

Hrankhawl's views were provocative and devoid of facts on Tripura's accession with India in 1949 and could disturb the communal harmony and peace of the state, Sarkar said.
