New Delhi: Delhi police on September 7 filed a chargesheet against Iftikhar Geelani,
son-in-law of firebrand Jamaat-e-Islami leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, accusing him
of supplying sensitive documents to Pakistan about the position of Indian troops and
para-military forces in Jammu and Kashmir.
The chargesheet was filed in the court of chief metropolitan magistrate Sangeeta
Dhingra Sehgal in which Geelani was charged under various sections of the Official
Secrets Act and Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 292 (pornography) of Indian
Penal Code.
The court took cognisance of the chargesheet and fixed September 16 as the date for
hearing Geelani's bail application.
The chargesheet was filed just two days before the expiry of 90 days of his arrest
after which Geelani could have got the mandatory bail from the court.
Delhi police said in the chargesheet that Geelani had "revealed" that the document
recovered from his residence, showing the troop strength in the Valley, was supplied
by him to Pakistan.
"During the investigation, the accused was interrogated at length and his
confessional statements were recorded in which he had revealed that in the garb of
press reporter he has been conducting espionage in India for Pakistan and he had
supplied the document showing position of Indian Army and para-military forces in
Jammu and Kashmir to Pakistan," the chargesheet said.
Geelani was arrested on June 9.
