Saturday, September 7 2002 15:11 Hrs (IST)

Jammu: With militants stepping up violence in the run-up to Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the Election Commission on September 7 relocated 27 polling booths in Jammu district after Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh reviewed arrangements for the first phase of polls slated for September 16.

Twenty-three booths in Surankot, one in Mendhar and three in Poonch districts had been relocated, district election officer Pawan Kotwal said.

Lyngdoh reviewed poll and security arrangements in Rajouri and Poonch districts at high-level meetings with senior civil and police officials on September 6.

He instructed officials to make all-out efforts to ensure free and fair polls, an official spokesman said.
