'Govt must reconsider 'dangerous' disinvt policy'
Saturday, September 7 2002 16:30 Hrs (IST)

Patna: Lok Janashakti Party president, Ramvilas Paswan on September 7 accused the Centre of going ahead with its ''dangerous dinvestment policy'' and announced that his party would wage a decisive battle for its revocation.

''The disinvestment policy is dangerous for India and the Centre should reconsider its proposals for sell-offs of the public sector undertakings," Paswan told a press conference in Patna.

Stating that the disinvestment policy was the one among the issues that forced him to withdraw his party from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and resign from the Union Cabinet, Paswan said the ministers in the Vajpayee Ministry reportedly opposing the policy should have resigned to put pressure on the Centre to rescind the policy.

''The ministers who are opposing the policy have no moral right to continue. Why don't they desert the NDA,'' Paswan said.

Lodging strong protest against the Centre's bid to close down the Barauni and Sindri units of the Fertiliser Corporation of India, Paswan said he had called a meeting of the office bearers of LJP and Dalit Sena to draw up a course of agitation as part of decisive battle for revocation of the policy.

''Our party will launch fill-the-jail campaign, stage dharna across the country, and our activists are to shed blood but we will not allow the draconian policy to continue,'' Paswan said.

Launching a broadside against the Rabri Devi government and RJD leaders for maintaining silence even after the Centre' decision to close down the Barauni fertiliser company in Bihar he said, "It is a shame on their part who are allowing a golden bird to go out of hand.''

''What is left in Bihar after it was divided. All sugar industries are facing closure, paper mills and silk industry are sick. Katihar jute mill is also closed," Paswan said calling upon all the parties to strongly oppose the Centre's move to close down the Barauni unit.

He said the state government should approach the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee against the move.
