Is there a political nexus to Veerappan's activities?

Chennai: Stating that it was time state police forces did their own work, Deputy Chief of Army (Training and Co-ordination) Lt Gen J B S Yadava on September 7 said that the Army's role was not to catch bandits and thieves.

"It is not our (Army's) job to catch bandits and thieves. It's the job of state police forces," he told reporters, after reviewing a short service commission passing out parade at the Officers Training Academy, who wanted to know if the Army would lend a hand in nabbing forest brigand Veerappan.

"It is time state police started learning to do their job and not fall back on the armed forces," he said and added state police forces should be capable of handling situations themselves or with logistic support and assistance of para-military forces.

It was, however, unfortunate that the Army was being called to do what was not its primary task, he said.
