Sinha terms Pakistan general elections as 'sham'
Tuesday, September 10 2002 20:12 Hrs (IST)

External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha London: Terming the October 10 general elections in Pakistan as "sham", India has said international community has done nothing to bring Democracy in that country.

"Pakistan has had a sham referendum (in April) and is now having sham elections," External Affairs Yashwant Sinha said in an interview with 'The Financial Times' published on September 10.

He also charged President Pervez Musharraf with rigging the polls by barring the main Opposition leaders from contesting.

"The international community has done nothing to bring Democracy to Pakistan. This is much worse than double standards. I think its some irrational fear of what would happen, you don't know who would win in a free and fair election in Pakistan," he said.

Expressing "deep disappointment" with the international community which was "acquiescing" in Pakistan's controversial elections next month, Sinha said, "I am disappointed that the international community is lapping it up."

He said India has no intention of holding talks with Pakistan while it continued to sponsor cross-border terrorism.
