Unified Command reviews J&K security situation
Thursday, September 12 2002 12:08 Hrs (IST)

Srinagar: A meeting of the Unified Command was held on September 12 to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir in the backdrop of militants stepping up violence to disrupt the four-phased Assembly elections starting September 16, official sources said.

The meeting, convened by Defence Minister George Fernandes, was attended by the commander 15 Corps, director general BSF and senior officials of other security agencies.

Besides reviewing the security situation, the meeting discussed measures to thwart attempts by various militant outfits to disrupt the poll process in the state.

Fernandes flew in here on September 11 evening, hours after the killing of senior state minister Mustaq Ahmad Lone and 15 others by militants.
