India, China, Russia FMs meet to defuse Iraq crisis
Sunday, September 15 2002 12:12 Hrs (IST)

New York: In a significant event, Foreign Ministers of India, China and Russia had a meeting in New York to work on steps to defuse the Iraqi crisis sparked by US President George W Bush's threat to take action to disarm Baghdad.

Yashwant Sinha, Igor Ivanov and Tang Jiaxuan at their informal meeting on September 14 without any agenda urged Iraq to implement without any preconditions the relevant UN resolutions on weapons issues in the Arab state.

The views of the three ministers on Bush's controversial plan of action were not immediately known.

During the two-hour parleys, Ivanov strongly condemned terrorism including cross- border terrorism against India.

Diplomatic observers said the very fact that the representatives of the three countries got together on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly is an event in itself.

Ivanov said the three ministers took common positions on Iraq wanting Baghdad to implement without any precondition all the resolutions adopted earlier by the UN Security Council.

Iraq must also create conditions for the return of the UN weapons inspectors, he said.

He made it clear that the three ministers discussed global issues and did not focus on Indo-Pakistan tensions.

Ivanov also said Russia is against terrorism in all its forms and that there can be no justification for terrorism.
